Summary
Bronze, Adelbert Wellington Brownlow Cust, 3rd Earl Brownlow (1844-1921) and Queen Bess, Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm, RA (Vienna 1834 - London 1890), 1871, signed and dated 'BOEHM fecit 1871'. A bronze sculpture of the 3rd Earl Brownlow with his hunter Queen Bess. The Earl, dressed in riding wear, stands by his horse looking out. He leans against her in relaxed contraposto, with his proper right arm draped over her withers and crest and his proper left hand in his waistcoat pocket. Brownlow's hat and crop are on the ground. A plaque inscribed 'The Earl Brownlow and Queen Bess' is on the front of the base.
Full description
The composition is derived from an 1869 group produced by Boehm for Queen Victoria, showing John Brown in the same pose as Lord Brownlow standing beside 'Flora', the Queen's pony, and 'Sharp', her collie (a plaster cast is in the Musée Condé, Chantilly). The plaster cast for this sculpture is NT 435693. See also Boehm's equestrian statuette of Lord Brownlow's uncle Sir Edward Cust (NT 435381) and a terracotta sculpture of Lord and Lady Brownlow's little terrier, Spice (NT 436828).
