Summary
One of a pair of walnut and parcel-gilt chairs, by Holland and Sons (London 1843-1942) circa 1870. Each with a shaped back, pierced and carved with swags, the upholstered seats on tapering fluted legs. Stamped, 'Holland and Sons' to the seat rail. Stephen Taprell & William Holland - cabinet makers, upholders, chair and sofa manufacturers (c.1803-1835)succeeded by Taprell, Holland & Son (1835–43). The firm trading as Holland and Sons after 1843 (sometimes after 1846 as William Holland and Sons) became one of the greatest furnishing firms of the Victorian period and was active until 1942.

Purchased with a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) from Edward John Peregrine Cust, 7th Baron Brownlow (b.1936) in 1984.
