Summary
Limewood, carved and stained applique wall drops, with foliage, fruit, flowers, ribbons and putti, possibly William Gibbs Rogers (1792-1875), c.1856-75. A set of four limewood wall drops mounted on the balcony of the Chapel Gallery.
Full description
The drops may be by William Gibbs Rogers (1792-1875), a wood carver, restorer and leading Victorian authority on Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721). From 1856 Rogers worked on the 17th-century Gibbons-style carvings at Belton House. He was also commissioned to produce carvings, such as NT 434858.7 and 434858.8 which also depict putti. The drops probably date from the late 1860s to 1870s, when Belton underwent extensive remodeling initiated by the 3rd Earl Brownlow (1844-1921). Alice Rylance-Watson October 2018
