Summary
A rosewood and gilt brass mounted centre table or breakfast table, possibly after a published design by Michael Angelo Nicholson (d.1842) London, circa 1826. The circular tip-up top with an applied moulded ormolu edge and beaded stringing raised on a spreading octagonal column and quad form plinth with four cast lion's paw feet with anthemion and scroll decoration.
Full description
Nicholson published 'The Practical Cabinet Maker Upholsterer and Complete Decorator' London 1826. A copy of this work is in the Belton Archive and it can be assumed that Lord Brownlow drew upon the designs therein. It is unclear who the cabinet maker or supplier was but Gillow & Co. London or Taprell, Holland & Son, London, both of whom supplied furniture to Belton during this period, are strong contenders.James Weedon (November 2018)
Provenance
Purchased with a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund (NHMF) from Edward John Peregrine Cust, 7th Baron Brownlow (b.1936) in 1984.
Makers and roles
after Michael Angelo Nicholson (d.1842), designer
