Summary
Wood, a displayed eagle, c.1850-1900. A painted and gilt wooden eagle, possibly carved of pine or oak. The body of the eagle is painted or stained dark brown and the beak, eyes and talons are gilded. The back of the eagle is gilded. The eagle's wings are outstretched (proper left wing tip broken), its talons clutch onto rocks. The object is very close to a carved eagle displayed within a scheme of wood carvings in the Chapel Gallery of Belton House (see NT 436757.5). Alice Rylance-Watson October 2018
