Summary
Water-colour over pencil on stiff cream paper, Shepherds by night by Louisa Anne Stuart, Marchioness of Waterford (Paris 1818 – Ford 1891). Damage - A tear in the bottom edge of the paper. Description - A group of male figures, seated and lying, all but one, who is apparently still sleeping, are turned in the same direction looking skywards. Behind them is a very dark blue sky. A very rough piece of work. Biblical Reference - Luke 2, v.8 - 14. Related Works Comments - Shepherds Watching their Flock by Night the title of a picture lent by Constance, Lady Lothian to the Carlton House Terrace Exhibition, 1892, Catalogue No.9. Date - 1870s.
