Pencil and grey wash/chalk on paper, General John William Egerton, 7th Earl of Bridgwater (1752-1823) by Henry Edridge, RA (Paddington 1769 – London 1821). Full-length portrait in Hussar uniform. He was the grandfather of Sophia Hume who married John Cust the 2nd Baron Brownlow. Signed and dated 1805. General John William Egerton, 7th Earl of Bridgwater was born on 14 April 1753. He was the son of Rt. Rev. John Egerton (1721-1787) and Lady Anne Sophia Grey (d.1780). He was baptised on 8 May 1753 at St. George's Church, St. George Street, Hanover Square, London, England. He married Charlotte Catherine Anne Haynes (1763-1849), daughter of Samuel Haynes, on 14 January 1783 at 58 Welbeck Street, Marylebone, London, England. He was MP (Tory) for Morpeth between 1777 and 1780, and Brackley 1780-1803). He succeeded as 8th Viscount Brackley on 8 March 1803, and 7th Earl of Bridgwater on 8 March 1803. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 28 January 1808, and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) on 4 February 1808. He gained the rank of General in the Army in 1812. He died on 21 October 1823 at age 70 at Ashridge Park, England, without issue. He was buried on 30 October 1823 at Little Gaddesden, Hertfordshire
