Summary
Plant stand, glazed stoneware, hexagonal and approximately gu-shaped, i.e with a wide base, a narrowing section, a globular middle section, a widening upper section and a rounded uppermost section with a flat top, the sides with pierced panels depicting flowers, fruits and dragons, probably made at the Shiwan kilns, Guangdong Province, China, 1860s, decorated with yellow, green, white and brown glazes on a dark blue ground.
Full description
Gu 觚, or ‘goblet’, is a type of ancient Chinese bronze wine vessel with trumpet-shaped base and rim and a globular section in the middle. The Shiwan kilns specialised in the production of practical and decorative stoneware objects (including tiles and architectural ornaments) covered with thick, glossy glazes. Purchased at Salviati & Co., St. James’s, London, 1870.
