Full description
The so-called Imari palette of underglaze blue combined with overglaze red and other colours and gold was developed by porcelain producers in Arita in Japan during the second half of the 17th century. Imari was the name of the nearby port via which the wares were exported. By the early 18th century the Imari style was being imitated by Chinese producers in Jingdezhen. The 1754 Belton inventory includes ‘A japan Tea pot’ listed among the household goods.
