Summary
Silver casket with gold spiral trim and raised geometric designs of cut semi-precious stones on sides and lid. Four legs depict lion masks. On the long sides in gold The Royal Coat of Arms on one, a harbour scene on other. Lord Beaconsfield's arms in gold on lid. On one of the short sides two figures join hands and below 'Ready Aye Ready'. On the other two figures join hands and below 'Defence not Defiance'. Engraved inside lid 'To the Rt. Hon. the Earl of Beaconsfield KG from British Residents in California Sept. 1878'. The base of the casket is marked 'Anderson and Randolph S.F., S.F.Cal., Sterling', below which is a maker's mark. The casket contains 'Address in recognition of his eminent services during the Eastern Question and especially in the Berlin Congress', a poem, a 'Californian testimonial to Lord Beaconsfield' and a cutting from The Graphic (dated 21 December 1878) showing the casket.
