Summary
Marble, The 'Hope' Venus, after or workshop of Antonio Canova (Possagno 1757 - Venice 1822), c. 1820-22. A marble sculpture of Venus after the bath, looking to proper left, covering her lower body with drapery, her proper left hand held to the right breast. A copy after the original 'Hope' Venus sculpted by Canova for the merchant banker and collector Thomas Hope (1769–1831), 1817-20 (Leeds Art Gallery, inv.no. LEEAG.SC.1959.0021.0003); see also signed copy of original also commissioned by Hope c. 1822-3 (National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, inv.no. 2014.136.242). Mounted on a grey marbled cylindrical pedestal.
