Summary
A cream painted and parcel gilt triple section wardrobe, English, circa 1870. Stamped J. MAPLE & CO. 145 TOTTENHAM CT RD. Of inverted breakfront outline, the centre section enclosed by a pair of mirror doors surmounted by a circular painted crest depicting the turret from Disraeli's coat of arms adjacent to Mary Anne's coronet, brass hanging rails within, the flanking taller side sections each with moulded cornice and pleated silk doors enclosing a fitted interior of four deep drawers, the whole standing on plinth base, two drawers each side with the MAPLE stamp, the locks stamped HOBBS & CO LONDON, also paper inventory label 421. Ensuite with NT 428703 pair of bedside cupboards.
Full description
Maple & Co was one the largest and most successful British furniture retailers and cabinet makers in the late Victorian and Edwardian periods. They were well known for their craftsmanship and were specialists in copying designs from the 18th century but with their own interpretation to suit current fashion. Their store was on the Tottenham Court Road in London.
