Summary
An upholstered footstool, English, circa 1850. The circular seat with tasselled fringe and standing on white ceramic feet. The top cover is of linen canvas, embroidered with a foliate outer border which frames a floral design worked in petit point. The embroidery is worked in wool and occasional silk yarns (tent stitch) and glass beads (black, white and grey). Red wool face cloth has been stretched over the sides of the footstool. The perimeter edge of the upholstered top is trimmed with a brick-coloured silk floss-wrapped rope cord, below which a matching fringe is suspended. Remnants of a glazed black plain weave bast fibre base cloth can be seen tacked to the underside of the footstool.
