Summary
Pen and wash on brown paper, View of the Disraeli Monument or Obelisk, Buckinghamshire, British (English) School.. Monument, with man standing to left looking at the base. The Obelisk was dedicated to Disraeil's father Isaac of nearby Bradenham, which crowns the far hillside to the south-west. It was intended as a surprise present by Mrs Disraeli to welcome her husband home after a long absence in 1862. She tok the family solicitor into her confidence, and through him secured an introduction to the architect E. B. Lamb. It was built for £500 of Bath stone, 'wrought at a distance and taken to the spot, and put up at once - no local mason being employed, and few even in the neighbourhood knowing what was being done, and no-one knowing the object'.
