Engraving carved in stone above the entrance to the Chapel of the Holy Trinity at Staunton Harold, Leicestershire and the engraving has the family crest of the Earl Ferrers above it. The engraving reads ' In the year 1653 when all things sacred were throughout y nation either demolhisht or profaned Sir Robert Shirley Baronet founded this church Whose singular praise it is to have done the best thinges in y worst times And hoped them in the most calamitous The righteous shall be had in ever lasting remembrance'
Provenance
The Chapel at Staunton Harold was presented to the National Trust by the 12th Earl Ferrers in 1954. A partial endowment was given by the Dulverton Trust and the building was restored by public subscription and with a munificent grant from the Pilgrim Trust and grants from the Historic Churches Preservation Trust and the Incorporated Church Building Society.
