Large 'lozenge' shaped funeral hatchment depicting the arms of Shirley, Plantagenet, Chichester and Itchingham in oil on lined canvas attached to a modern stretcher. Wooden frame painted black, with a gilded sight edge. For Washington Sewallis Shirley, 9th Earl Ferrers, born 3rd January 1822, who married on 23rd July 1844 Lady Augusta Annabella Chichester, daughter of Edward Chichester, 4th Marquess of Donegall, and died 13th March 1859. She died 9th October 1914.

Large 'lozenge' shaped funeral hatchment depicting the arms of Shirley, Plantagenet, Chichester and Itchingham in oil on lined canvas attached to a modern stretcher. Wooden frame painted black, with a gilded sight edge. Described in Hatchments in Britain, volume 8, p. 76: Dexter background black. Qly, 1st and 4th, Shirley, 2nd and 3rd, Plantagenet, the Badge of Ulster in chief between 1st and 2nd qrs., impaling, Qly, 1st and 4th, Chequy or and gules a chief vair (Chichester), 2nd and 3rd, Azure fretty argent (Itchingham). Earl’s coronet. Crest: A Saracen’s head couped at the neck proper wreathed at the temples or and azure. Motto: Honor virtutis praemium [Honour is the reward of virtue]. Supporters: Dexter, A talbot ermine eared gules ducally gorged or. Sinister, a reindeer gules, billetty and ducally gorged or, attired sable, and charged on the shoulder with a horseshoe argent.
