Magnificently ornate and glittering, these armorial andirons of wrought brass are designed to stand out against the bold shape of the fire grate. The designer A.W.N. Pugin thus provided the Shuttleworths with a glorious enrichment of their coat of arms as the focus of attention in the room.
Summary
A cast iron basket grate with integral back plate and andirons, probably designed by Pugin. The two large andirons with crocketed cast-iron feet have engraved brass plaques with the Shuttleworth coats of arms, and elaborate finials of Gothic tracery in wrought brass; the ogee shaped back plate has the monogram 'KS'; the basket has four twisted front supports and finials.
