Summary
Cassone or chest in style of Italian Renaissance, probably Italian or French; the lid decorated with a heraldic lion with motto - 'Dono/grande/e il/se pichol/l'amicitia' in raised plasterwork and gilt; the ground of the lid dark with many gilt fleur-de-lys - the effect is of embossed and gilt leather with mock-studs; the front of 2 square panels flanking 2 long panels - the square panels painted with fleur-de-lys (L) and rampant lion (R), the long with a scene of St. George and the Dragon, based on the painting by Vittore Carpaccio in the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni, Venice, 1504-07; the ends painted in red and gold with a scrolled design; on the ends a drop-handle or writhen form attached by quatrefoil plated; bracket feet with pierced scrolls; front and sides made of a single plank each with applied slats to imitate joined work; painted all over on a prepared red plaster support; key has traces of ?gilding. Painting very murky; gilding gone; plaster ground lost in places.
