Summary
Large carved oak armchair, early Victorian, in Charles II style; the tapered and upholstered back panel with carved scrollwork to the crest rail and sides, between spiral-carved uprights; the down-curved arms scrolling over forward-curving armrests; the seat upholstered; the rectangular seat rails with scroll-carved front apron; the front and rear legs spiral-carved with ball feet. Back and seat panels embroidered in petit point floral work by Mary Jackson, daughter of Robert Richardson of Scotby, Carlisle, wife of Charles Jackson of Cringles, near Carlisle. The chair is one of a pair made at Whitby, where the Jacksons lived for the sake of Mary’s health – she died of consumption on 17 November 1864, aged 41, mother of seven or eight children.
