Full description
An English Civil War iron cannon ball for a demi-culverin cannon found during the excavation of the west side of the west guard chamber at Corfe Castle in 1986. Archaeological find CA 86 – excavated in 1986, small find number <509> from context (17) which was the Civil War period deposit against the west side of the west guard chamber window. Another seven whole or part iron mortar or cannon balls were found during the excavation of the trackway between the guard chambers and from the west side of the west guard chamber in 1993.
Provenance
Bequest of the estates of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy made to the National Trust by Henry John Ralph Bankes (1902-1981). NT ownership commenced from 1982. The cannonball was excavated from the site four years after Corfe Castle was bequeathed to the National Trust as part of the Bankes estate of Corfe Castle and Kingston Lacy.
