Summary
Ghiordes Muslim prayer rug, last half of C19. Hearth rug. Turkish village rug, probably Kirshehir, with double niche design. Centre panel with 5 guard stripes of white flowers on red, and red flowers on white. Wide border of quatrefoil flowers on mustard ground and 2 outer guard stripes. Rug with symmetric wool knots (Turkish) over cotton warps (2 warps/knot), with a double weft of red wool between each row of knots. Ends have been finished with kilim (flat weave) ends. Side edges/selvedges have been finished with ginger coloured wool weft over and under 3 pairs of warps.
Provenance
Part of the Lothian Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by Philip, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882-1940).
