Summary
Artificial stone, A Sphinx by Austin and Seeley (1828 - c.1877), 1877. One of a pair of sphinxes. Half lion, half woman, wearing headress. It is the same as the ones placed at Syon House. Sphinxes are said to symbolise the search for ancient wisdom. Bought by Lady Lothian.
