Summary
One of a pair of carved gilt wood and gesso demi-lune console table, English, Norwich, 2nd quarter 19th century by William Freeman (1784-1877). With a Siena Brocatelle marble top above a frieze decorated with scrolling floral designs on cabriole legs and scrolled feet, the corner brackets carved with further floral scroll decoration. Bearing a trade stencil to the under rails 'Freeman Manufactory, St. Andrews, Norwich' There are three generations of the Freeman family, Jeremiah and several Williams' who worked at various addresses in Norwich from the late 18th century, they describe themselves as 'Carvers, Gilders & looking glass manufacturers, wholesale and retail'.
Provenance
Part of the Lothian Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by Philip, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882-1940).
