Summary
One of a set of eight mahogany metamorphic library steps, English, circa 1850. Modelled as a bench with a caned drop in seat with red wool upholstered cover above ten turned supports tied by stretchers. The bench stands on its end and becomes a set of library steps, with four solid plank steps and with a retractable stair pole for support which screws into the top step.
Provenance
Part of the Lothian Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by Philip, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882-1940).
