Summary
An escritoire, probably converted or made up in the late 18th/early 19th century in England. The exterior of the fall front incorporating a Chinese lacquer panel depicting tendrils and bamboo in gold on black within borders of imitation Japanese nashiji (‘pear skin ground’) lacquer and a mother-of-pearl inlay diaper pattern, with false hinges imitating those of a cabinet with side-hung doors, the sides plain black within the same borders and with metal handles, the varnished plain wood interior fitted with open compartments. For its stand see NT 354227.2. Likely intended as a companion piece to cabinet NT 354228.
