Print, engraving, John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow and Viscount Alford (1779-1853) (after Sir Martin Archer Shee, PRA) by Samuel Cousins, RA (Exeter 1801 – London 1887). John Cust, 1st Earl Brownlow was born on 19 June 1779, the son of Brownlow Cust, 1st Baron Brownlow of Belton (1744-1807) and Frances Bankes (1756-1847). He married: (i) Amelia Sophia Hume (1787/8-1814), daughter of Sir Abraham Hume, 2nd Bt. and Lady Amelia Egerton, on 24 July 1810 at St. George's Church, Hanover Square, (ii) Caroline Fludyer (1793/4-1824), daughter of George Fludyer and Lady Mary Fane, on 22 September 1818 at Ayston, Rutland (iii) Lady Emma Sophia Edgcumbe (1792-1872), daughter of Richard Edgcumbe, 2nd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Lady Sophia Hobart, on 17 July 1828 at St. George's Church, Hanover Square, London. He was educated at Eton and Trinity College, Cambridge he graduated, in 1801 with an M.A. He was a Fellow, of the Society of Antiquaries. M.P (Tory) for Clitheroe 1802 and 1807. He was a Fellow, Royal Society, 2 May 1805 and succeeded to the title of 2nd Baron Brownlow of Belton on 25 December 1807. Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, 1809 and 1852. Created 1st Viscount Alford of Alford on 17 November 1815 and 1st Earl Brownlow on 17 November 1815. Became a Knight Grand Cross, of the Hanoverian Order in 1834. Was President of the Royal Archaeological Society 1841-1849. He died on 15 September 1853 at age 74 at Belton.
