Summary
Stationery holder with 2 dividers into 3 compartments. From a desk set. Late C19. Gien. Earthenware with blue and gold design on white ground. Front has design of a devil's head in gold on blue ground inside a white oval, surrounded by scrolling foliage, within a border of blue circles on yellow ground. Two turret finials at sides. Two internal dividers with design of gold scrolling foliage on blue ground with upper border of blue circles on yellow ground. Shaped back with gold design of devil's head in centre between two mythical beasts with putti on their backs, on blue ground. A petal design at top of back between upper border of blue circles on yellow ground. Sides have yellow cherub in scrolled foliage with a serpent, on blue ground. Gien factory, nr Orleans, France, c.1880-1920.
Provenance
Part of the Lothian Collection. The hall and contents were bequeathed to the National Trust by Philip, 11th Marquess of Lothian (1882-1940).
