Horses and cavalry were still used in the First World War; the cavalry charge was a massively outdated tactic in the face of the new advancements in technology such as machine guns. The Generals still believed in the tried and tested tactics from old wars such as the Crimean War and Boer War. When it came to WW1 these did work, and resulted in huge losses of life. The way war was fought, and technology, advanced rapidly during the war years, which in turn affected everyone and the way people lived from then on.
