Summary
Cottell archive - Document titled 'North Tawton Register beginning 1538'. Elizabeth J Cottell, Nottingham, added to this information in August 2016: This two page 1866 document concerns the Cottell family of North Tawton, Devon. I believe that this information was sent to W.H. Cottell (the Genealogist and author of the much quoted pamphlet: A History of the Cottle, Cottell, or Cotel Family of the counties of Devon, Somerset, Cornwall and Wilts compiled from County Histories, Heralds’ Visitations, Public Records, Wills, Etc. eventually published in 1871) in response to his research. (See also Item Number NT 348041 Family Tree by W H Cottell printed in 1891.) I think the writer was Hugh Pyke, who appears to have been a School Master and Registrar at that time (census records). Page 1 shows extracts from the Parish Register for the Cottell family, which seems to have been used in W H Cottell’s 1871 pamphlet. The Thomas Cottell (son of John Cottell of Yeolmbridge) referred to at the very top of the page was Escheator to Queen Elizabeth I. Page 2 gives an account of a 1682 bequest to the Poor by Mark Cottle originally from North Tawton but who had most recently lived in St Gregorus, London. The writer also gives some information on The Barton (sometime referred to as Cottles’ Barton), a house that had been in the possession of the Cottell family. (Seen in 2015 and the inscription ‘R.C’ can still be seen above the window but any inscription above the porch was hidden by foliage.)
Provenance
from Miss Miles of Paignton.
