Summary
Cottell archive - Document titled 'The Petition of Anne Cottell, Widow'. Elizabeth J Cottell, Nottingham, added to this information in July 2016: “I think this relates to the widow of Walter Cottell of New Ross, County Wexford, Ireland (buried 1636) who would have been a distant relative of William Henry Cottell’s. I have recently visited PRONI in Belfast as part of other research and found a copy of his will which he signed on 29 August 1631 (Original in Dublin) which he made prior to going overseas. Walter was the son of Walter Cottell of Yeolmbridge (d. 1633) and Jane Browne. The younger Walter left Yeolmbridge and went to Ireland, perhaps to follow his two brothers. Walter settled in New Ross, County Wexford and married Anne Brabant daughter Roger Brabant. Walter is listed as Gentry and owned various lands and Mills like his father in England. The children also had land which had been given to them by their Grandfather, Roger Brabant. The children were Walter (Gloucester Hall at Oxford in 1642 aged 15), Roger, Joan and Mary. It appears that Walter died just over four months later on 3rd January 1632. If this petition does indeed belong to Walter’s widow, and I think it does, then Anne went on to live for at least another thirty two years. I found the detail in the petition was interesting to read and that she was exempted from quartering officers or soldiers. In William Henry Cottell’s 1891 family tree he says that the descendants of Walter Cottell were still living in New Ross two hundred or so years later in 1884 as farmers.”
