Summary
Cottell archive: Letter relating to the early history of the Cottell family. Handwritten in black ink. Elizabeth J Cottell, Nottingham, added to this information in July 2016 by observing that the writing appears to belong to W. H. Cottell, and that it refers to the Cottells of North Tawton. "In particular, it mentions Amyas Cottell born in 1566 (sometimes spelt Amias) who was said to be a friend of Sir Walter Raleigh’s. I’ve researched and written about this branch of the family and found a transcript of a letter from Amias Cottell to Lady Raleigh dated 10th October 1597. W H Cottell reported that it was in the possession of the Marquis of Salisbury. See ‘Western Antiquary; or Notebook for Devon, Cornwall and Somerset’ Vol VI Pub 1887 page 79) and the 1891 Family Tree by W H Cottell [348041] Amyas is at the top."
