Summary
Fancy dress costume. Label on breeches says 'B.J.Simmons and Co. Covent Garden. Charles I courtier suit. S.563' consisting of: black velvet, high-neck jacket with wide, white, lace cuffs; black velvet knee breeches; long-sleeved white, fine cotton shirt with lace cuffs and wide, black satin, pleated neckband with attached lace jabot; detachable, wide, lace-edged white collar; spare neckband (minus jabot); one pair of black stockings; smoking cap; one pair high-fronted, black leather shoes with black ribbon bow, see also BAD/L/5. Shoes belonged to Mr Thomas Walker (died 1970). Mr T Ferrers-Walker, his son, says this is not fancy dress. His father used to wear it at times, particularly when with Baron Ash of Packwood.
