Summary
Portrait miniature, Hugford Hassall (d.1809), British (English) School, Gold-rimmed, oval miniature of Hugford Hassall of Henley-In-Arden. Plaited hair in rear plus initials H.H. In a white leather case, 90x65 mm. Hugford Hassall was executor of the will of Thomas Ferrers (d. 1766) and may have been related to Thomas Ferrers' wife, Margaret Kempson, of Henley-In-Arden. Hugford Hassall lived in a large house, The Priory, opposite the west door of St Alphege parish church of Solihull. In 1750 a Catholic mission was started in Solihull, probably at The Priory. In 1760 Hugford Hassall built a priests' house with a chapel hidden behind the land he owned in Solihull, now the site of St Augustines Church (RC). Although illegal, no-one objected to this. The first priests to serve this chapel are thought to have come from Baddesley Clinton (ref. B Malley(?) 'Solihull and the Catholic Faith' p51 and p55).
