Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour painting on card, Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester (1533 – 1588) by William Derby (Birmingham 1786 – London 1847). 1824. Three-quarter-length portrait, turned slightly to the right in a cream striped doublet and hose, fur-lined jewelled cloak, collar and George of the Garter, black cap with plumes. Hazel eyes, brown moustache and forked beard, aged c.50. Plain drab background. Previously incorrectly described by Rebecca Ferrers as Henry Grey, Duke of Suffolk. Also see BAD/D/20. This is supposedly a miniature copy of the original portrait held at Hatfield House. The National Portrait Gallery, which also has a copy, confirmed in January 2001 that this is Robert Dudley and not Henry Grey. Marmion Ferrers (Rebecca's first husband) bought the miniature for 12 guineas when it was labelled Henry Grey.
