Summary
A caned mahogany library armchair, English, circa 1825, the rectangular back with shaped uprights, caned sides and padded armrests, the arm terminals raised on block and turn supports with gadrooned collars and tapering to castors, fitted with an adjustable book rest attached to a brass arm which can be positioned on either the left or the right arm.
Full description
This chair formerly belonged to Thomas Clarkson (1760-1846), who worked with William Wilberforce (1759-1833) for the abolition of the Slave Trade. On the wall adjacent to the chair is a picture of Thomas Clarkson.
