Watercolour on paper, Afternoon Rest by Vincent-Jean-Baptiste Chevilliard (1841-1904), signed, right-hand side, in brown ink; V.Chevilliard. Stuck into the book. The scene shows a gentleman sitting to the left of a table on which there are two bottles and some glasses. He appears to be drunk or asleep. Pink striped wallpaper and a door in the background.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust from the estate of the late George Richard Lawley Gibbs, 2nd Baron Wraxall (1928 – 2001) with the assistance of the NHMF, the Art Fund and donations from members and supporters in 2002.
