Summary
Watercolour heightened with white on paper, A Country Tavern by Jean Jacques Zuidema Broos (1833 - 1882), inscribed, bottom left corner: F. J. Broos. A landscape view showing a country scene with a cottage to the left, trees in the centre and a town or village to the right. In front of the cottage is a man in a yellow coat seated at a table reading a paper to a group consisting of men, women and children. To right of centre is a huntsman in red coat, on horseback with dogs and poultry.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust from the estate of the late George Richard Lawley Gibbs, 2nd Baron Wraxall (1928 – 2001) with the assistance of the NHMF, the Art Fund and donations from members and supporters in 2002.
