Provenance: manuscript inscription in brown ink 'Mary S Oates' on front flyleaf of both volumes, and 'Oates' in pencil on title page of first volume. Binding: nineteenth-century half binding of marbled paper and burgundy leather (very faded); orange red and blue marbled endpapers and edges; simple blind tooling to upper and lower covers; simple gold tooling to spine; black leather spine label with 'Conquest of Peru, Prescott' lettered in gold; volume number lettered in gold directly on spine.
