Lengthy manuscript inscription on friendship on front free endpaper, signed "Inverclyde / 1930" and quotation on friendship from Edwards' 'Damon and Pythias' in the same hand on second front free endpaper [i.e. John Alan Burns, 4th Baron Inverclyde (1897-1957)]. Provenance: Twentieth-century pictorial bookplate (sailing ship with Fairhaven arms on sails): ‘Sapphire R.Y.S.’ and ‘Broughton’ [i.e. from the library of the yacht ‘Sapphire’, owned by Urban Hanlon Broughton (1857-1929), later by Cara Leland Rogers, Lady Fairhaven (1867-1939)]. Gilt armorial centrepiece stamp of Lord Fairhaven on upper board [i.e.: Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966)]. Binding: Twentieth-century full blue morocco; triple gilt fillet to form an outer border; gilt armorial centrepiece stamp of Lord Fairhaven on upper board [i.e.: Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966)]; sewn onto five raised bands; gilt-panelled spine, lettered direct (gilt tooled) with title and author; double gilt fillet on board edges; gilt fillets on turn-ins; gilt textblock edges. Binder's gilt stamp on front pastedown: 'Robson & Co. Ltd. W.1.'
