Bought by the National Trust as Lot 682 at the Modern First Editions & Children's Books, Original Illustrations & Artwork, Playing Cards sale at Dominic Winter Auctioneers, on 16 June 2022. Manuscript corrections throughout text, possibly authorial. Provenance: (1) Manuscript inscription in black ink on front free endpaper: "Aunt Mary [i.e. probably Mary Elizabeth Tracey (née Sackville-West, d.1944)] from Vita. Crick, 1910". (2) On front pastedown, armorial bookplate of Baron de Spon (motto: Luctor et emergo) pasted over pictorial bookplate of Alfred Tomlinson. (3) Pencil note at foot of pastedown recording previous purchase of volume for 50p ca.1982. Binding: blue cloth, possibly original; gilt-lettered on upper board: Chatterton, Victoria Sackville West.; gilt-lettered on spine: Chatterton.

Presentation copy inscribed to ‘Aunt Mary, from Vita, ?. 1910’. This may be Lady Leonora Mary Sackville or Mary Elisabeth Sackville-West. Collected by Baron de Spon who was an enthusiastic collector of books, particularly after his retirement from the Daily Telegraph. He bequeathed a collection of 1300 books to a friend including this edition of Chatterton. Purchased at auction in 2022.
