Hatfield Forest was purchased by the Archer Houblon family in 1729 for their only male heir Jacob Houblon III. The Hallingbury Place estate, including Hatfield Forest, was sold at auction in 1923. The forest was given to the National Trust by the Buxton family in 1924. Jacob Houblon's great nephew James Puxley inherited the 1892 visitor's book, and loaned it to the National Trust from 1995. In 2019 Mr Puxley donated it to the National Trust.
