Provenance: with a manuscript dedication from the author to Marie-Madeleine Maret (née Lejeas) duchesse de Bassano, dated 1814; "Donné à Mr Hector Viger par Mr Huyaux Dutilly"; pencil note "P. Viger"; Mr. and Mrs. James A. Rothschild.zBinding: early nineteenth-century French red straight-grained morocco gilt; an initial H beneath an imperial crown in the centre of upper cover; both covers with a lyre at each corner, surrounded by a broad border flanked by a narrow roll on each side and an eagle at each corner. Lettered "Romances" in script up the flat spinein the second of five undecorated panels; gilt edges; pale green endleaves; original slipcase of orange cardboard lined with green paper.
