Binding: seventeenth-century full dark brown calf (rubbed); sewn onto five recessed cords; smooth spine; single gilt fillet border; gilt fillet and hatched pattern along board edges; spine rebacked in tan calf, with original gilt spine preserved, tooled with arabesque, bird, fleuron and floral tools, lettered directly onto spine at a later date with gilt title 'Gemistus & Herodianus Gr.' (evidence of missing goatskin label); gilt edges. Manuscript waste visible underneath pastedowns at hinges. Pencil inscription in the hand of Cecil Clarabut (the National Trust's first Libraries Adviser) on front free endpaper: "repaired at Cambridge 1955".
