Manuscript inscription on fly-leaf facing title page: "Chronological Pedigree" [i.e. title note in catalogue for anonymous works, written by John Mitchell (ca. 1685-1751), librarian to Sir Richard Ellys]. Manuscript inscription at head of leaf 1 recto: "Jesus be my spede R Kemys" [i.e. Roger Kemys (d. 1610), compiler of the MS.] Various inscriptions on recto of rear fly-leaf, including: "chart. 8.E.4. Bedwynd" and "Roger Kemys". Nineteenth or twentieth-century pencil number on front fly-leaf: "B37". Binding: late sixteenth-century English blind-tooled full dark calf over pasteboards; sewn onto five cords; blind triple fillet border and inner frame, the inner frame with blind cornerpiece stamps; blind strapwork centrepiece stamp; stubs remain of two pairs of leather ties in foredge of boards; single blind fillet along board edges, with diagonal hatching adjacent to the spine at the head and foot of the boards typical of Oxford bindings; rebacked in calf; reddish-brown leather spine label with gilt title 'Chronol. Pedigree MS.'; manuscript vellum waste (ruled in red with musical notation, presumably from a fifteenth-century liturgical service book or hymnal) wrapped around spine. Pencil notes in the hand of Cecil Clarabut (the National Trust's first Libraries Adviser) on front pastedown: "(found on 9.e)" and "Repaired at Cambridge, 1955".
