Loose piece of paper inserted at front, with inscription in nineteenth-century hand: "Arms of Thomas Sackvile, Lord Buckhurst, afterwards Lord Treasurer of England and Earl of Dorset - Knight of the Garter in the reign of Elizabeth and this was probably his copy of the Rules of the Order. JB"; this was probably written by the Revd. James Bulwer (1794-1879), curate of Blickling and Erpingham who acted as Blickling's librarian for Lady Suffield and the 8th Marquess of Lothian. Loose piece of paper inserted between leaves 1-2, with inscription in eighteenth-century hand: "Poor Knights in Lord Chamberlains Gift". Provenance: Thomas Sackville, Baron Buckhurst (1536-1608). Library of Sir Richard Ellys (1682-1742). Nineteenth-century manuscript shelfmark and inscription in black ink on leaf 1r: "7 E 14" and "Ellys Library". Faint pencil shelfmark[?] in upper right corner on leaf 1r: "B46". Binding: sixteenth-century gold-tooled calfskin, with the royal arms of Elizabeth I, Queen of England and Ireland, in centre within badge of the Order of the Garter and surmounted by a crown (stamp 5 in British Armorial Bindings database); single gilt fillet outer and inner frames, the inner with fleur-de-lys cornerpieces; traces of blind fillets on lower cover; sewn onto five recessed cords; smooth spine, divided into eight compartments by double gilt fillets each with single floral tool; spine rebacked in calf; all edges gilt; evidence of ribbon ties (missing) on fore-edge of boards; marbled paper pastedowns (almost bouquet pattern on front pastedown, wide comb pattern on rear pastedown). Pencil inscription in the hand of Cecil Clarabut (the National Trust's first Libraries Adviser) on verso of leaf 1: "repaired at Cambridge 1955".
