Long of Wraxall 29.vii.24"; letter pasted on flyleaf verso of the same date from "W" to "my dear Edith": "I hope enclosed will not displease you : it is every clumsy & ill expresses my feelings, especially of admiration for the really splendid work you have done, you & Charley, for Ireland North, & for the Empire" [both inscription and letter by the author to Edith 7th Marchioness of Londonderry]. Also on pastedown: Twentieth-century armorial bookplate (dated 1922) set in a landscape with De Lazlo's portrait of Edith Lady Londonderry in the uniform of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in a medallion above, lettered at the bottom of the plate "Edith Helen Marchioness of Londonderry. D.B.E." . Motto in Scottish Gaelic over portrait ("Tha mo cridhe's an tir nam beann" [My heart is in the land of mountains]) [i.e. Edith Helen Chaplin, m. in 1899 Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh and 7th Marquess of Londonderry from 1915]. Binding: Twentieth-century publisher's full blue cloth, gilt armorial device on upper cover, gilt lettering on spine.
