The sender, "Fox", presents this volume as a rare first edition to her. Provenance: Inscribed on verso flyleaf "Circe from Fox with love" [i.e. presented to Edith Helen Chaplin (1879-1959), m. in 1899 Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 7th Marquess of Londonderry from 1915, possibly by Hon. Alexander McDonnell (1857-1945), son of the 5th Earl of Antrim and Clerk of the House of Lords, or his sister Lady Jane Clinton nee McDonnell (1863-1953)]. Binding: Nineteenth-century half maroon morocco on marbled paper over boards, gilt tooled and lettered on spine. Marbled endpapers; marbled edges.
