Provenance: inscribed on flyleaf "From H to C Christmas Day 1930" with a quote from "Ossian" [possibly presented by James Ramsey MacDonald (1866-1937), known as "Hamish the Hart" in the Ark Club, to Circe, i.e. Edith 7th Marchioness of Londonderry]. Twentieth-century armorial bookplate (dated 1922) set in a landscape with De Lazlo's portrait of Edith Lady Londonderry in the uniform of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps in a medallion above, lettered at the bottom of the plate "Edith Helen Marchioness of Londonderry. D.B.E." . Motto in Scottish Gaelic over portrait ("Tha mo cridhe's an tir nam beann" [My heart is in the land of mountains]) [i.e. Edith Helen Chaplin, m. in 1899 Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 7th Marquess of Londonderry from 1915]. Binding: Twentieth-century full brown calf, triple gilt rule forming a border, gilt tooled on spine, maroon leather spine labels, lettered in gilt. Gilt board-edges and turn-ins. Gilt edges and marbled endpapers. Stamped on verso flyleaf "Bound by Riviere & Son"; additional stamp at head of flyleaf = illegible.
