Provenance: Inscribed on second flyleaf "This book relates the adventures of my mother, Lady Florence Sutherland Leveson-Gower, afterwards Lady Florence Chaplin - Her great girl friend Miss Lock, who became a hospital nurse - and their devoted governess and companion Miss Bragg. Miss Jones - Lady Florence; Miss Brown - Miss Lock; Miss Robinson - Miss Bragg. Given to me at Trentham Hall - Stoke-on-Trent by my Uncle the 4th Duke of Sutherland before I married. ELondonderry, Mount Stewart 1932. These adventures must have been about 1870-6" [i.e. presented by Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of Sutherland (1851-1913) to Edith Helen Chaplin (1879-1959), m. in 1899 Charles Vane-Tempest-Stewart, 7th Marquess of Londonderry from 1915 and inscribed by her]. Twentieth-century gilt stamped monogram on upper board with initial 'E' against a rose inside a viscount's coronet and framed by a double C. [i.e. Edith Castlereagh, later 7th Marchioness of Londonderry]. Binding: Nineteenth-century half grained green calf on marbled paper. Gilt monogram on upper cover. Gilt tooled and lettered on spine. Green marbled endpapers, gilt edges [Poss. bound by Bagguley of Newcastle-under-Lyme?]
