Provenance: twentieth-century pictorial bookplate (dated 1910), bearing arms of Vane-Tempest-Stewart impaling Chaplin. Banners with motto (1) in Scottish Gaelic ("Tha mo cridhe's an tir nam beann" [My heart is in the land of mountains]), (2) Knowledge is the antidote to fear. Open book entitled "Of gardens by Bacon". Images of a horse and Castlereagh portrait. Banner lettered "Edith Castlereagh" around image of Diana Chasseresse [i.e. Edith Helen Chaplin (1879-1959), m. in 1899 Charles Viscount Castlereagh, 7th Marquess of Londonderry from 1915]. Inscribed on p.83: Invergordon [multiple times]; Mr John R [?]. Binding: nineteenth-century brown cloth, with red morocco title label on upper cover, gold lettered and tooled.
